Best Scooter For A 1 Year Old

So what is the best scooter for a 1 year old? It is quite possible to get scooters which are suitable for children as young as 1 year old which adapt as they grow. Scooters for 1 year olds tend to have a seat for the child to sit on. This is necessary because  one year old children don’t have the coordination required to ride a scooter in the traditional way.

Mini Micro 3 in 1 Ride on Scooter

This scooter is suitable for children aged 1-5. It has three stages of use, stage 1 is a ride on scooter which has a seat and is suitable for 1 or 2 year olds. Stage two loses the seat and is suitable for 2 and 3 year olds. Stage 3 sees the scooter adapt into a mini micro scooter by swapping the plastic stem for the traditional mini micro T bar. Stage 3 is for children up to the age of 5.

The seat has 2 height settings and attaches to the handlebars with a metal bolt. An allen key is provided with the scooter for this purpose. The seat also has foam padding for extra comfort and is very solid. When your child is ready to go from stage 2 to 3, the ride-on  or ‘O’ bar handlebars will click out of the base and the scooter T-Bar handlebars simply push in. Steering is the same lean or tilt and steer mechanism used in all mini micro scooters. The child simply leans in the direction they want to go and the scooter will turn that way.

This is not a cheap scooter (current price around £85), but as you would expect from Mini Micro, it is a very well made and very practical scooter. Also, bear in mind that it will last 4 years making it much better value for money and worth the investment. It is available in several different colours.

If you already own a mini micro scooter it is possible to buy the O Bar and seat as an accessory and attach it to your scooter for a younger child. At the current price on Amazon though it might be better just to buy the whole set.

Other Scooter Options For 1 Year Old Kids

If you are looking for a scooter for a 1 year old there aren’t many good alternatives to the 3 in 1 Mini Micro Scooter. Here are two very similar 3 in 1 scooters from different brands.

One of these is the Y Glider 3 in 1 Scooter. This has a removable seat and a height adjustable handlebar. It is suitable for children from the ages of 1 – 5 years old. This is another scooter with a lean to steer method of steering. This scooter doesn’t seem to be as widely available in the UK so prices vary. The pink model shown is currently £54 on Amazon.
The other is the FASCOL baby walker kids scooter. This is suitable for children from the ages of 1 – 7 years old. Like the other two scooters it has a seat which can easily be removed. The handlebar has a telescopic method of adjustment and goes up to 70cm. It is much heavier than the Mini Micro 3in1 Scooter. (3.2KG compared to the mini micros 1.5kg). Costs around £60 on Amazon.

Another option is to buy your 1 year old a balance bike suitable for their age. Obviously these don’t turn into scooters as they grow so you will probably end up buying a scooter as well when they get older. There are a couple of balance bikes suitable for one year olds. One is the Chillafish Bunzi 2 in 1Balance Bike. Anther popular option is the ToddleBike 2 Pre-Balance Bike.

A cheaper fun alternative for a 1 year old is the VTech 3 in 1 Zebra Scooter

This costs just under £40 on Amazon. It has all sorts of buttons to press, makes lots of noises and has flashing lights. It can be adapted as the child grows to be either a ride on scooter, a push along toy or an actual scooter. While lots of fun (if a little noisy) the big drawback is that you can’t turn the handle bars to steer the scooter. To go round corners you have to pick it up and move it (while sitting on it). So while it can give lots of enjoyment and is a great toy, it is not a scooter that will be used like the Mini Micro Scooter above.
